Self-Storage – an overview

self storage canterbury

What is self-storage?

Self-storage is a relatively new idea which has become extremely popular over the last decade or so. Instead of paying huge amounts of money and having to deal with loads of red tape when storing your valuable possessions in a corporate setting, the concept totally simplifies the storage process for you. You have access to as many storage units as you wish depending on how much you need to store and how much you can afford. You have access to the unit whenever you like so you can add more valuables or take some out at any time. Due to unbelievably low prices, both businesses and domestic residents can take up the facility of storage where before they could not.

Who can benefit from self-storage?

Just about anyone who has too many assets and not enough space. The self-storage units can be used for short-term or long-term periods. For instance, it offers organisations a much cheaper way to create space on their business premises. Instead of getting rid of valuable equipment which is used infrequently, or losing space to its presence in the office location, managers can keep overflow company assets in a safe and secure cheap self-storage unit at low cost. This is especially important with data which needs to be archived. Huge amounts of unused paperwork can be shifted to an outside area at low cost and free up space on site.

Self-storage units can also provide a great asset for people moving house. Sometimes aligning the housing chain can be difficult and an extra temporary place to put your valuables until everything is settled can be useful. Also when moving into your new home there may not be enough space to move everything in at first. So again self-storage units provide a great stop gap at low cost.

Students who are moving a lot due to the college terms may need to put their possessions in temporary storage.

Moving home? Need space? Time to get rid!

storage faversham kentMoving house can be an exciting time. You are beckoning a new phase of your life with your family and looking forward to new adventures and opportunities. The optimum word here is, of course, “new”. It is a chance to leave the old bugbears and old tired routines behind and immerse yourself in a vibrant new life. Of course you want to take your memories with you and a great deal of your possessions will enable you to imprint your identity on your new home.

But there is another great opportunity for you as you prepare to move your castle, lock stock and barrel to the other side of the world – a chance to get rid of all that useless stuff you never use cluttering up your free space. It’s a bit like getting rid of the old you and it will help you let go of “what was” and take on your new location. As well as that, it can help massively with storage and removals costs during the moving process.

So here’s a few tips to be a little ruthless with all that clutter and get things moving:

  1. Old technology – The digital world moves so fast nowadays the computer is probably out of date before you have left the shop. So often we are left with old models or old gadgets which we have even forgotten how to use. Wipe the memories and hard disks and send them to a charity or send them for recycling.
  2. Foods and spices – most foods will not survive the move and you are going to think fresh. So go on, be ruthless throw it out – but be sure you factor in a time when you can acquire food for your first meals and tea for the move itself.
  3. Ornaments – Now’s the time to throw out that really ugly stuff you have never liked from your in-laws. The stuff that just kind of sits there and gathers dust. Your new home is about new themes – so get rid.
  4. Paperwork – do you really need those old receipts, electric bills, water bills and guarantees for gadgets you never use anymore? Now’s the time to go through it all and shred.
  5. Kitchen and DIY tools – No doubt your kitchen and shed is cluttered with that stuff you keep “just in case you need it” It is so old now it has become faded and rusty through non-use. Be brave – let it go.
  6. Clothes – The wardrobe is full, but you still don’t have a thing to wear! Be tough and ask yourself what is out of fashion, what doesn’t fit anymore, and what you just don’t like. Steel yourself – say goodbye.
  7. All that junk! – yes its junk and you know it is. You are likely to get sentimental about it in some way but moving is thinking about logistics. Cost of the removals van and storage, the packing, unpacking and all the hell in-between should bring you back down to earth!

Great tips for student storage

Moving away from home to attend college? You are probably brimming with excitement and looking forward to a whole new way of living. You are also likely to be aware that it comes with a set of “setting-up-home logistics” which are peculiar to the student life.

For a start, it is probable you will be moving to a much smaller living space, so getting all of those precious possessions into your new home may come as a bit of a shock. Before you move you are going to be doing quite a bit of filtering down as to what is absolutely necessary to take. You will also need to have space for learning materials which you are bound to acquire throughout the year. The other point to take into consideration is you are likely to be living in temporary accommodation and perhaps travelling between home and your student base. Therefore, you need to consider how you will cope with your possessions at half term etc.

Here a few tips to make that move run a little more smoothly:

  1. Use the walls as well as the floor

Where floor space is limited, consider getting pegs, racks and shelves for your walls so you can find a resting place for all the things you are going to use on a regular basis.

  1. Collapsible and Multi-purpose furniture

There is nothing more useful than an occasional table. When not in use it can be just put away. A desk with shelves to keep all your books and paraphernalia will also come in useful.

  1. What goes under…

Take a look around the room you are in now. It may seem as if it is full to the brim, but I bet you can find a whole lot of wasted space. This is usually found under furniture with legs such as beds, tables and chairs. For instance, you can get cheap plastic containers on wheels to go under your bed. Better still – use the suitcase you brought with you to put all the superfluous stuff.

  1. Hangers and handles

Nobody really looks at hangers closely, but it is a fact that they all come in different shapes and sizes. The worst ones, as far as space is concerned, are those which are moulded in a crescent shape and are thick and bulky. Make sure your hangers are slim-line and you will be surprised how much space you will make.

  1. Storage bins

Storage bins are a great solution for storing all that smaller stuff. But do not overfeed them and try to fill each with one type of possession. This way, things are accessible and you know where everything is

Brilliant storage tips for storing all your awkward furniture and saving space at the same time

The great thing about boxes is it is an absolute dream storing them. Pack them stack them, carry and label them – there are no awkward corners, no sticky-out-bits and no silly edges. They all fit together like a simple jigsaw puzzle. If only everything you needed to place in self-storage was like that. If only we could easily put that Danish furniture back into the flat pack it came in!

Furniture, if you storing household items can be quite a nightmare because of shape, size weight and well sticky-out bits. Not only are they difficult to manoeuvre and store neatly, if they are not positioned well you are likely to lose a great deal of space you are paying for. But believe it or not there is tried and tested techniques for getting those hard to move valuables into your place of storage without the stress and headache and still make the most of all that precious space.

  1. Don’t lay sofas and mattresses down. Stand them on end to maximise space. But ensure that they are safely stored and they will not fall.
  2. No doubt the covers of your sofa or chairs are very valuable – you do not want to get them torn marked or damaged in the move. Consider covering them with bags beforehand.
  3. Be careful what you store together. Colour sometimes runs so do not store anything near ornamental valuables which could transfer colour.
  4. It may not have originally come as a flat pack but here possible dissemble as much of the furniture as you can. For instance, take of the legs of a table and wrap in blankets or bubble wrap.
  5. If the table will not disassemble put a blanket on a pallet and point legs up to protext he table’s surface.
  6. To save space put chairs upside down on top of tables and an upside down chair inside a similar chair the right way up.
  7. Lightweight boxes and assorted small objects can be placed on the tops of dressers. To protect the dresser cover with a blanket or similar textile.
  8. Use cling film to keep doors and drawers closed during the moving procedure
  9. Make sure vulnerable items like your TV is wrapped in bubble wrap, sheets or blankets for protection.
  10. If you can store your liquid screen TV’s and computer monitors in a climate controlled storage area. Extreme climate changes can cause fractures.
  11. Store mirrors upright for best protection and for best use of space.
  12. Avoid sealing anything in plastic as this can lead to mould, mildew and rot.
