Spring clean and store!

That time of year has finally arrived. OK the weather is still pretty unpredictable – rain, high winds and a spattering of snow still book-ends those wonderful balmy sunny days, but if you are in the UK, as we all know, you take what your given as a sign of spring-time. And those sunny days are happening more often – and when they do, it is definitely warmer.

Spring has sprung and we can’t wait doing the things attributable to this exciting time of year. This is the time for beach fun, walks and cycle rides in the countryside, thrills at the fairground, re-designing the garden and long Sunday afternoons spent idling over a cold pint of lager.

But Hold on.

There are other, not so cool stuff, that spring brings with it.

Yes, this is the time for spring cleaning. If you are house-proud in any way it will be these first hot months of the year that gets you asking yourself how are you going to clean what you have, get rid of what you don’t need and re-organise, buy new trendy stuff to give your home an uplift and reset it all so it still fits into the same ever-diminishing space.

As much as chucking out the old tired stuff can be tiresome, it can also be very rewarding – though it doesn’t beat the experience of re-designing your home space with something new and fabulous. However, it is often the throwing out task where we fall-down. When we first do an inventory of our homes we are clear about what we want to get rid of. When we actually come to action it – something seems to get in the way to stop us zipping through the list with ease.
So what’s this all about? How come we cannot go through with clearing the decks?

Well, there are a number of possible reasons:

1. Although tired and worn some of our possessions have a nostalgic value. We just can’t let it go.
2. Gifts received need to be kept as courtesy to the giver. It feels wrong to let it go.
3. Some possessions may be seasonal and therefore only used at certain times of the year. We will only end up buying the same stuff again later in the year.
4. Some documents need to be kept within an archive. The tax man cometh.
5. Guides and instruction manuals need to be kept where they can be accessed easily. Murphy’s law you will need them.
6. Some furniture seems so much part of your everyday environment, it’s still difficult to get rid of it even though you have grown to hate it. Our surroundings become our identities.

So what is the answer? How can you move on and still hold onto those nik-naks its just wrong, or too difficult to let go of?

Self-storage is the solution. It gives you that extra bit of space so you can hold onto those beloved – but tired treasures, those important aged documents and offers easy access to all that stuff you only need every now and again. With self-storage you really can re-fresh you living-space without having to be ruthless with the valuables you need to keep by your side. A good self-storage company will offer 24/7 accessibility; a quote to meet you exact spatial needs, on-site removals support and great prices.

If you are living in Kent in the Faversham, Herne Bay, Canterbury area give us a shout. We are here to help you get over the chores and get out and enjoy the spring weather with peace of mind. To learn more about all Need A Space can offer you click here

Save money by making the most from self-storage

saveSelf-storage really can offer great ways to store your domestic valuables and business assets at ridiculously low prices. And it is all so easy. Just find a storage provider near you, rent out a unit, fill it up and relax. That’s it. The self-storage company will keep it safe and accessible for when you need to get to your stuff again.

Ok that’s easy, but there are ways to make the storage process even more streamlined and in the long run – save even more money. Take a look at our clever ideas for making more room in your unit, store your valuables safely and make the best of what is open to you:

  1. First of all, a cardboard box may seem boring, but they are not all the same. The cheaper cardboard boxes, or the ones you are likely to get free from supermarkets tend to be very weak. They will crush easily and so will not protect your valuables well -especially if they are going to be stacked. Invest in double strength cardboard boxes. They are more resilient and longer lasting too. Think about the size of the box. You may be able to get more in a big box but heavy boxes are difficult to carry and move around. Smaller boxes are easier to transport and easier to stack.

  1. You may be storing temporarily or for long-term. Either way it is likely you may need access to some of your storage sometime. So organise your storage. Try to keep to certain categories in each box and label what each box contains. Divide up your unit space so that certain categories can be found easily. Leave an aisle between your valuables so everything is accessible and keep a map of where categories can be found.

  1. Us the storage space you already have. If you have luggage, or dressers and wardrobes with drawers, use this space to store your smaller valuables.

  1. Nowadays most furniture can be disassembled to a degree. This can really offer a great deal more space in your unit. But be careful. When they were originally assembled you had a manual. Now you have to rely on common sense. Keeping a disassembly cheat sheet is essential. Don’t forget to keep screws bolts and nuts somewhere safe.

  1. Blankets, sheets and cloths can take up a lot of space. Vacuum bags keep your belongings neat and tidy and also very flat – therefore creating much more room. Your valuables are also now protected from dust and damp.

Whatever the reason you need that little bit of extra space – self -storage can provide the answer and at a price you can afford. It is flexible to allow access at any time and offers the kind of security that gives you peace of mind. To learn more about Need A Space based in Faversham in Kent click here

So who needs self-storage in Kent?

self-storageThe greatest thing about self-storage is that it has benefits for just about everyone in every kind of situation. From business owners to re-locators and from home-owners trying to free up space, to travellers wanting to store their valuables until they return, self-storage gives you the one factor you need to look, good, function and move on: Space.

Space. The only time that space was in the slightest bit interesting was when Captain Kirk was taking his starship to the final frontier at double warp speed.  Otherwise it doesn’t tend to motivate and excite – which is a pity as it is fundamental to most of the big decisions we make in life.

Moving home

Take moving to a new house for instance. I recently made the decision to move to a new home in Anglesey. The move was a great success but there was one disappointment with our new-build home: Storage space. This is because space is pretty boring. The kind of things which attract us to a new home are the amount of rooms, the location, how high the council tax will be, does it have double glazing(?), what fixtures and fittings will remain etc. Because storage space is all about those things that stay out of sight and are not used much. Its only when there is nowhere to put the unsightly-rarelky used stuff that they really become a great problem!

Business self-storage

As a business owner, your greatest investment is likely to be in stocking your product. You will also perhaps need a store for office equipment when it is needed. If your business is thriving and growing but not yet ready for new premises you need to free up space to make room for your expansion. If your business is seasonal or if you are a salesman travelling with a large itinerary a place to keep all your assets is essential.

The travellers piece of mind

If you are the kind of person who loves travelling, then you need to know that your valuables will be safe when you get back. A great benefit of the self-storage route is you know your precious assets will be secure under more than just a front door key.

Security and flexibility while learning

Students (and sometimes teachers) have to deal with terms, half-terms and holidays. While they may rent their accommodation while they are studying away from home, they are likely to be needing to store their valuables when they return home.

Time to de-clutter!

And what better than a spring clean? As the family grows and there are more hungry mouths at the table it often seems like space is at a premium.  We have all been in that frustrating situation where you can’t open a cupboard door without everything falling out of it – and half of the stuff in there you never use anyway! Time to move the useless stuff out so you can start functioning again.

Downsizing

Downsizing has become the trend – especially later on in life – so self-storage is the perfect solution to ensuring that you can still hang on to those most precious things you hold most dear.

The list is endless. Whatever the reason you need that little bit of extra space – self -storage can provide the answer and at a price you can afford. It is flexible to allow access at any time and offers the kind of security that gives you peace of mind. To learn more about Need A Space based in Faversham in Kent click here

Manage space in your home with our cool storage ideas

Often when choosing a new home, we may not give a lot of time to thinking about the amount of storage space we will need. Instead we tend to be seduced by conservatories, plush fitted kitchens, en-suite bedrooms and fashionable dining rooms. It is only when we are trying to fit our old house into the new space that we may get a nasty shock and have to be super-creative in making everything fit. So here are a few simple tips from Need A Space to help you turn that diminishing space into a regular Tardis:
1. Organise that mass of Scarves and ties
Ties and scarves are funny things. One minute you can’t find one for love nor money – the next they seem to be taking over the house. Organise them so they are all located in one place. Wardrobe too full? All you need is a couple of towel bars and some shower rings. They go nice and easy on the back of a door and you know where they all are!
2. Buy a bed with storage area underneath
Don’t just think about how comfy that mattress is going to be or whether you should have a TV electronically appearing at the bottom of the bed. Make sure you have space under the bed to store stuff or buy a bed that at least has Draws to put clothes in etc.
3. Sit and store: ottoman and garden bench
Think about storage whenever you are buying for your new home. For instance, that ottoman can double as a laundry basket and can also be a pretty cool place to sit too. The same goes for that new garden bench which offers a place for your garden tools underneath the seating area.
4. Wall TV
Here’s an idea. We sit glued to it every night, yet we still forget how much space the TV is likely to be taking up. It probably came with a mounting bracket, so why not take it off the floor and put it on your wall right out the way – but looking even better.
5. Kids toy chest
When the floor is cluttered the size of the house seems to get smaller and smaller. Kids toys can be a main culprit for the chaos. Why not get them their own Toy chest which they will treasure and hopefully use to tidy up after themselves.
6. Pot rack or ceiling hooks
Frustration arises when you have a beautiful kitchen but there is just not enough cupboard space. Look to the walls and the ceiling. A pot rack or hooks in the ceiling to hold pots can create more space and give your kitchen character at the same time.
7. Garden tool rack
All too often sheds start bursting at the seams far too early. The key is to use the walls for garden racks, individual hooks for garden tools and sheds for that cornucopia of stuff you never really use.
8. Wall mounted shelves for those books and ornaments
You don’t have to splash out on a display cabinet or expensive bookcase to provide a place for your books and ornaments. A handy shelf here and a cute shelf there can show your valuables and priceless books off and make floor space at the same time.
9. Use that alcove
Architects are forever coming up with new designs. Square rooms are a thing of the past – but now we may find the odd alcove is not being used to its best benefit. The answer is to build a bookcase or set of drawers into the space. And don’t forget under the stairs too!

The emotional roller-coaster of moving home

stressHere at Need a Space in Faversham Kent, we see people on the relocation journey every day of the week. We may well offer self-storage space and a house removal to help people with the logistics of the move, but these are very much practical services. The one factor that will be present with any move – whether it is local, national or international – is stress. Unfortunately, it is not a myth that moving home will probably be the most stressful things you do. So why is this true if you are likely to be moving to exciting pastures new?

Fundamentally, re-locating is more than just going to a new house. It is likely that the whole area of where you live is the resource for all of your creature comforts, social networks and important institutions such as your child’s school. If you have been resident in a specific area for a long time, those bonds and structures become part of our everyday lives. They are essential and form feelings of security and comfort – but on a daily basis they go unnoticed. The very road we live in, the local convenience store, well-known traders and professionals etc., are all variables which add to a feeling of belonging, easy living and safety. It is often only when we start the process of re-locating that we begin to notice again the precious assets we have around us.

This can cause many bitter-sweet feelings as we go through the process of moving. A roller coaster of emotions which swings violently between the excitement of the dream location coming to fruition and the feelings of loss we may feel about leaving the world we know so well, behind. One minute we cannot wait to get to the new location and the next minute we are left wondering why on earth we are leaving!

The last thing you need is serious doubt on top of all the other stressful practical issues involved in moving. Will you finish your packing by completion date? Will your buyer pull out? Will you be gazumped on the house buying? Will anybody in the chain pull out? There is a time in the whole process of locating when our identities are reflected more in the place we are going to than the place we are leaving and if a crisis happens which prevents the move going ahead, you may well find yourself feeling as if you are in no-man’s land.

All these feelings tend to gather together at the worst possible times. Usually when nothing is moving forward with the move or at times when you are expecting the worst… The great news is the vast majority of couples and families we have helped move home at Need A Space are always happy they made the move, once it is all over. It may cause a whirlpool of feelings, but from our experience, it is likely to be a very happy ending…

All those removals extras you could ever need!

moving home

There is no doubt that moving home can be one of the most stressful things you will ever do. But if you prepare well for getting all the practical side of the project sorted it could make it a whole lot easier to deal with. Here at Need A Space, we offer our own House Removals Service. We also offer storage space to Canterbury and the surrounding areas for people and businesses making a big move and need an area to store furniture and valuables for a long or short period. Knowing storage space is available when trying to work out the logistics of the move can be a huge weight off your mind.
We also offer those basic extras that you are going to need to get everything packed away and ready for transit. You can see our full list here. But to be truly prepared you need to cover all bases. So here are a few extras that it will be worth having close to hand to help packing and transit go that little bit more smoothly:
Sofa Covers – Whatever the length of journey your furniture will be going on, you are going to need to protect your favourite chairs and seating. You are going to need a good sit down when you get in!
Wardrobe cartons and bar – It may be that for transport purposes you will need to dismantle wardrobes, or you may be thinking of buying new wardrobes at your new location. This is a really innovative way to temporarily store your clothes neatly until you are settled.
Snap blade knife – After making such a grand job of taping up your cardboard boxes, you will need to get into them fast at the other end, so have a snap blade knife available to cut easily through those wrappings.
Gloves – This may sound a little obvious, but we are not talking about the cold here. After moving heavy boxes and furniture around all day, gloves will help protect you from blisters and cuts to the hands.
Blankets – Blankets can be a great way to protect your more fragile ornaments, furniture and pictures in transit.
Heavy duty Cartons – You are going to need touch boxes. Also make sure they are the fight size for you. Big boxes will hold a lot, but they may be difficult to lift when full. On the whole it is far better to go for the smaller box which will be more mobile.
Tape dispenser – You don’t want the frustration of “finding the end”, or the sickly taste of the glue as you bite the right length of tape. It’s slow and very tedious. A tape dispenser cuts the tape for you, puts the tape in position and makes the tape easy to apply.

The point is, be prepared and get the right tools. It may not make moving house a joy, but it will go some way in getting it all done faster and with less irritation.
