Brilliant storage tips for storing all your awkward furniture and saving space at the same time

The great thing about boxes is it is an absolute dream storing them. Pack them stack them, carry and label them – there are no awkward corners, no sticky-out-bits and no silly edges. They all fit together like a simple jigsaw puzzle. If only everything you needed to place in self-storage was like that. If only we could easily put that Danish furniture back into the flat pack it came in!

Furniture, if you storing household items can be quite a nightmare because of shape, size weight and well sticky-out bits. Not only are they difficult to manoeuvre and store neatly, if they are not positioned well you are likely to lose a great deal of space you are paying for. But believe it or not there is tried and tested techniques for getting those hard to move valuables into your place of storage without the stress and headache and still make the most of all that precious space.

  1. Don’t lay sofas and mattresses down. Stand them on end to maximise space. But ensure that they are safely stored and they will not fall.
  2. No doubt the covers of your sofa or chairs are very valuable – you do not want to get them torn marked or damaged in the move. Consider covering them with bags beforehand.
  3. Be careful what you store together. Colour sometimes runs so do not store anything near ornamental valuables which could transfer colour.
  4. It may not have originally come as a flat pack but here possible dissemble as much of the furniture as you can. For instance, take of the legs of a table and wrap in blankets or bubble wrap.
  5. If the table will not disassemble put a blanket on a pallet and point legs up to protext he table’s surface.
  6. To save space put chairs upside down on top of tables and an upside down chair inside a similar chair the right way up.
  7. Lightweight boxes and assorted small objects can be placed on the tops of dressers. To protect the dresser cover with a blanket or similar textile.
  8. Use cling film to keep doors and drawers closed during the moving procedure
  9. Make sure vulnerable items like your TV is wrapped in bubble wrap, sheets or blankets for protection.
  10. If you can store your liquid screen TV’s and computer monitors in a climate controlled storage area. Extreme climate changes can cause fractures.
  11. Store mirrors upright for best protection and for best use of space.
  12. Avoid sealing anything in plastic as this can lead to mould, mildew and rot.
